The home of these lanterns is Hoi An, south of Vietnam (just 28 km to the Southeast of Danang City.) Hoi An is the world cultural heritage, was one of the major trading centers, a prosperous commercial port town of Southeast Asia in the 16-17th century. Merchant boats from Arabian countries and China came to Hoi An to trade. Hoi An has long been a cultural crossroads where Japanese, Chinese, Dutch, Indian traders set up their emporiums or established their own quarters for permanent habitation. Today, this enchanting town is a living museum dedicated to the past. Hoi An's old-fashioned charm is always visible, on the 15th of every lunar month modernity takes another step back. On these evenings the town turns off its street lamps and fluorescent lights, leaving the Old Quarter bathed in the warm glow of color silk, glass and paper lanterns. Lanterns are hanging on the altar of each Hoi An family. They have the beautiful Chinese word that is the name of each clan. Lanterns are light up in every corner of the town when there are the traditional opera performances, poem readings and chess competitions during monthly full moon Festivals. In ancient times, Vietnamese people made lamps out of shallow bowls filled with oil. Later, foreign traders introduced lanterns, ranging from round and hexagonal designs from China to diamond and star shaped ones from Japan. Hoi An lantern is various size and shape, from normal lantern to dragon lantern or fish lantern with full of color. Hoi An people are very proud of their lanterns. It is very simple and easy to do only with hard work. They have to use the old bamboo soaking ten-day in salt water against wormhole and moth, then drying it and sharpening it as the size of lantern. Cloth must be silken or nylon and must be tough enough for stretching. The lantern making process requires the good skills and a lot of patience. To be done a couple of lantern requires 4-work days and 3 decorative works. These lanterns can create the atmosphere of the ancient town in your home.
